The tannery has four big drums with the capacity of
12,000kg per drum for liming and tanning. In the picture, the pelts are
off loaded to under go further mechanical treatment called defleshing
after Liming and reloaded for Tanning. The purpose of Tanning, i.e.
converting pelts into leather, is
 | stabilize it against enzymatic degrading and increase its
resistance to chemicals. |
 | raise its shrinking temperature and increase its resistance to hot
water. |
 | Enhance its strength properties. |
 | eliminate its ability to swell |
 | reduce its shrinkage in volume, area and thickness, |
These result are obtained by cross-linking the collagen chains with
various tanning agents. |
