Zamtel has exceeded 1.5 million customers and is now chasing the 2 millionth customer-milestone. To this effect, Zamtel the only indigenous telecommunication company in Zambia, would like to thank all its esteemed customers, both old and new, for being a part of this success story. We say a special thank you to all our customers for using the network on everyday basis for their communication needs.
To answer the clarion call from our customers for an end to prohibitive calling rates across networks, Zamtel recently launched the All NETWORKS TARIFF Promotion. This promotion in addition to the great effort and dedication from our employees has led to the unprecedented growth in both the number of customers and traffic volume. The 1.5 million mark is a launch pad for Zamtel to the envisioned position of being the leading telecommunications provider of choice.
While embarking on this journey we are cognisant of the competitive nature of the telecommunication industry. The industry requires constant innovation, creativity and capital investment to meet the ever evolving customer needs. To support the required level of innovation and creativity, Zamtel will soon be rolling out infrastructure to support data hungry innovative products and services to make them more accessible in both rural and urban areas. To grow our data customers, in the last three years we had rolled out an additional 543 3G-sites and we have started rolling out 4G sites to enable the Zamtel network handle ultra-high speed data services. This is in addition to many 2G and 3G sites that will be dotted across the country. We shall also continue to expand our ADSL Internet services and introduce optical fibre for our enterprise customers.
Zamtel has also been investing in Marketing campaigns to improve the brand image in the minds of customers. The Zamtel brand has been on a transformation journey to make it more youthful and appealing to resonate with our customers. The brand repositioning journey had some brand campaigns such as Zamtelligent and Zamtel IT, which used more of a youthful imagery. Our Corporate social responsibility Campaign for Water for Life to provide safe clean drinking water in communities and the education program of ZAMSPELL IT, donation of computers to schools for ICT FOR ALL are just another way of saying thank you to our customers and building resonance of the Zamtel brand with the communities in which we operate. Zamtel Management and Staff will remain committed to providing quality and affordable telecommunication services in the space of Mobile, Landline, Internet and Value Added Services (VAS) among others to all the people and organisations in Zambia. To achieve this, Zamtel is working with its partners Huawei and ZTE to expand the 3G network so that it can accommodate more traffic to improve quality of user experience. So far expansion works have been completed from Kitwe to Chililabombwe, while equipment for the rest of the country is being manufactured by our partners.
Zamtel has been repositioning itself to become a total telecommunications provider of choice by improving its network coverage, distribution channel to make the products and services easily available in the market and most importantly by aligning the entire organization towards customer centricity. We understand that we have a lot of work to do before the majority of our fellow countrymen can proudly talk about our brand, we however appreciate the patriotism and the unconditional support we have continued to receive to this day. We also want to recognize the wonderful support we have continued to receive from IDC our Shareholder, the Government through our line Ministry, Ministry of Transport and Communication as well as the Ministry of Finance. It is because of this support that we have found the positive energy that is fuelling this growth phenomenon that is driving us to the wanted position.
